I hope you all are now loyal MiddleL subscribers now, what with all the action happening these days. And as always on the MiddleL list, I have picked up a more than a few ideas that I am actually going to use out of all this drama. Even from people I wouldn’t usually find myself agreeing with. Here’s a “previously on” for those who ain’t in. In this corner we have a young whippersnapper of a teacher who obviously takes his job seriously and is good at it, but comes off a tad self-righteous. He has the point of view that we can measure intelligence and learning, and while our current tests may be a bit lacking, high-stakes testing is not inherently bad. He comes from a charter school sort of background and has about 10 years on the job. His name is Mr. Lee. And in the other corner, we have the current MiddleL champeen, Marion Brady, who says that our whole discussion about education is being dictated by corporations who have no interest in actually reforming a broken system that is outdated and unsuited to a modern 21st century society. He believes that out current method of assessing student [...]

Can you tell I’m on vacation? I got up at 9:15 this morning… Usual time: 4:55. I went to bed at 1:00… Usual time: 10:00. I have read several books. I am sore from doing “honeydos” for the past several days. I have taken 5.5 naps in five days, and had to make my own lunch for the same amount of time. There have been a lot of potato chips involved. The books: Ready Player One, by Ernest Cline. Set in a dystopian near-future where everyone spends most of their time in in giant internet-based virtual world called the Oasis, it follows the adventures (1st person) of a high school kid as he competes with the whole world to find the Easter egg hidden by the world’s creator/programmer. The finder inherits the guys trillions and controls the virtual world. Lots of ’80s pop culture references, so if you’re a child of the ’80s… My boy was born in 1999, and he loved it. The Wrecking Crew, by Kent Hartman. The book’s subtitle says it best: “The Inside Story of Rock and Roll’s Best Kept Secret.” Did you know that the Beach Boys didn’t do anything but sing on the records? That Glen Campbell [...]

Every year for the past three I have voted against the two-week spring break, but right now that stretch can’t be here too soon or last too long. I’m crabby and ready for a long break. And we haven’t even had any actual bad weather this year at all, like you all in South Dakota and Virginny and places like that… Speaking of… Mrs. M, have you read Downtown Owl? It’s set in a fictional NORTH Dakota town in 1984, and features a noob hs history teacher. There really isn’t much of a plot, but it’s one of those books where you don’t care because the characters are so good. Well, not necessarily “good.” You know what I mean. Is there some sort of rivalry between North and South Dakota? Just wondering… Heather, over in the comments, says I’m brave to bust out Tom Sawyer this year. More like moronical, as my brother used to say. I swear, Mark Twain’s comedy stylings fly right over about half of them, but when I act it out and explain, they’re rolling on the floor. And I know I ain’t that funny. There just isn’t the vocabulary and background knowledge any more. Everything has been [...]

Day Three… And I already wasted a whole weekend without posting. D’oh. Marion Brady to the rescue. I know listservs are so 1998, but as I have said here several times before, you should still be subscribed to at least one: MiddleL. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the concept of a listserv (or e-mail list), go to Wikipedia and read up. My regulars probably probably remember me beating this drum before, but I’ma gonna do it again. Go join up. People with problems/questions like our MrM’s get answers all the time from people with a lot more letters after their names than I have. You can sign up here. As I have also said before (here’s the first time), my fave contributor on MiddleL is Marion Brady, who has some revolutionary (these days) ideas about education. We all know that things like NCLB and “Race to the Top” and the testing associated with them are doing more harm than good. The tests are mostly about memorized knowledge and not about the skills need in a future world. Which, by the way, probably can’t be tested for. But there’s a lot of money to be made in the [...]

Well I guess I hafta go back to work tomorrow. This whole two-week spring break thing makes one mighty lazy. Sixteen days of sleeping in, plus some mighty fine summer-like weather, and it starts to look an awful lot like summertime. At least with the late Easter this year–funny how the most important of Catholic holidays follows the old school pagan spring festival scheduling–we only have 33 school days left until it actually is summer. I have no idea what we’ll be doing tomorrow. I should probably keep this short. I just got back from a few days in Santa Cruz. That’s the funky California city that still thinks it’s a town, and their UC Santa Cruz mascot is the banana slug. They also have the Boardwalk, which turned 100 this year. Wooden roller coaster, midway games, PINBALL, merry-go-round where you try to grab the ring, the whole nine yards. I voted against the two-week spring break (our falls are much more beautiful than our springs, which are wiiiindyyy), but I do have to admit that when you go to places like the Santa Cruz Beach-Boardwalk, it’s nice to have everybody else finished with their break and back at work/school. No lines! [...]
