I teach 7th grade English and we just finished The Outsiders. Now I wish I would have cranked out Hank Williams. The complaints and hysterics would have made my day. I finally gave up and now build in an extra minute every single time they hand in papers. As they hand them in row-by-row, I flip through them on the spot. If there is no name on the paper, I have the student fix it immediately. Yes, it takes more time every time they hand in papers, but for me, it is worth it to not deal with the problem later. It also lets me see at that moment who has not handed in their papers, and it gives me an extra moment to harass them! :-) Now if we could just figure out a way to get them to flush the toilets. Seriously. We even have SIGNS ON EACH STALL DOOR that tell them to flush the toilet and wash their hands, and they still don't do it. Don't even get me started on some of the other grossness that happens. Do other middle school students do this, or it is just the lovely ones here in the midwest???? Today was the first day in over a week where I was feeling close to being myself. And of course those pesky kids started making me all crabby again. @Mrs. M: I usually admit right up front that I ain't "on," and they'd best be wary of me when I'm illin'.
