We had an open mouth quiz on chapter 8 today. One class has several boys who have a new phrase they’re trying out. Personally, I sort of like it.
4) On p127, we get an example of what seems to be foreshadowing. What is it? a) When Two-Bit says that Darry will kill him if Pony’s really sick. b) When Two-Bit says Darry could be a Soc. c) When Pony says he has a helpless feeling. d) When Two-Bit calls Pony chicken. e) When Pony says he’ll be well by tonight.
“OK, number four. What’s foreshadowing?” The class takes care of that one for me. Most of them laugh, and one says, “I was wrong.” (Pony’s line at the end of chapter three, and a beauty example for them of foreshadowing.)
“Oh yeah. Ok, so it’s C, right?”
“True that.”
“Number six. Darry, I mean Dally (they always mix up those names), right?”
“True that.”
(me, doing some “refocusing” of a gentleman off to the side) “‘Clark,’ could you focus your comments on the questions? Open mouth only applies if that mouth is talking about the questions.”
“True that.”
“And I think we’re done with that line, for today at least.”
“True that.”
Speaking of foreshadowing, chapter eight is chock full. The doctor saying, “It can’t hurt now,” as the boys visit Johnny. Dally putting Two-Bit’s knife under his pillow. Pony’s above-mentioned bad feeling. I like to stop when Dally puts the knife under his pillow.
“Why would Dally want/need a knife under his pillow…IN THE HOSPITAL?” Some, who have read ahead, try to blow it, but I shush them down. It makes the payoff in chapter nine so much better.
When Pony and Two-Bit visit Dally in chapter eight, he’s cursing the nurses for not letting him smoke. I tell them that, when we’re finished with the book, and they want to spend a buck to rent the cheesy movie (and see Tom Cruise as Steve, Emilio Estevez as Two-Bit), they can watch this scene and see S. E. Hinton, playing the nurse who’s frustrated with Dally. She’s on screen about 10 seconds.
“Are we going to watch the movie in here?”
What’s the opposite of “True that”?

Do I love your blog? True that! Thanks for sharing your experiences as I go through my 18th year of teaching The Outsiders to eight graders. You are a bright spot in my day!
the opposite of “true dat”–as my kids say it– is: “oh HELLLLLLL no!”. make sure to draw out the hell into 3 or 4 syllables.
the curent version of “true dat” at our school “for reals” or “for serial/cereal” is still going strong here in the bay area.
The opposite is still one that I hate:
“My BAD” Yes people are still saying this in Texas.
